Stainless Steel Screws, Nuts, Bolts and Washers

Stainless steel fasteners (screws, nuts, bolts and washers) are resistant to corrosion, staining, and do not corrode as easily as ordinary steel fasteners. What makes them different from carbon steel fasteners is the amount of chromium added to the steel. Carbon steel oxidizes (rusts) when exposed to air and moisture. This iron oxide film is defined as an active film that accelerates further oxidation thereby disrupting the metal's structure. Stainless steel fasteners, on the other hand, when exposed to air and if sufficient amounts of chromium is present (> 11%), creates a passive film of chromium oxide which prevents further surface oxidation and blocks corrosion from spreading into the metal's internal structure.

Not all stainless steel is created equal

Different grades of stainless steel are available to suit specific applications and different environment to which it will be exposed. Each grade of stainless steel contains specific ratios of steel to chromium in addition to varying amounts of other elements such as nickel, molybdenum and manganese. The specific chemical composition creates unique mechanical and physical property profiles altering corrosion resistance, strength and workability of the specific alloy. Stainless steel can be further sub-classified into one of five distinct metallurgical "families" or classifications based on the metallurgical composition of the alloys within each classification. Austenitic stainless steels are chromium-nickel-manganese or chromium-nickel containing alloys identified by the 200 and 300 series, respectively. The 300 series stainless steels are the most widely used of all stainless steels. Because of their high chromium and nickel content, they are highly corrosion resistant, nonmagnetic, workable and are hardened by cold working. The latter property is ideal for fasteners as many of the production processes are considered cold working (eg cold heading and thread rolling) and thus increases yield and tensile strength of the austenitic family of alloys. Of course depending upon the application and exposure to specific chemicals, other grades might be more advantageous to use.
