Stainless Steel Thread Cutting Screws

Another type of tapping screw with specialized tips (type 1, type 23, type 25, type F) that physically remove material from the substrate to tap it's own mated thread path. They are also available in carbon steel. this screw is designed to tap its own threads as it penetrates the substrate but requires a pre-drilled pilot hole. Available in points 'F', '1', '23' and '25' with a variety of head styles (flat, hex, hex washer, oval , pan and truss) and drives (hex head, phillips, slot, 6-lobe,), in sizes from #2 to 1/4" and lengths from 3/16" to 3".

Point types:

  • TYPE 1: Thread cutting screws with regular machine screw threads, a blunt point and a single notch cut into the tip of the shank. Designed for use in harder metals including steel, alloy steel and cast iron.
  • TYPE F: Thread cutting screws with machine screw thread, a blunt point and a slightly tapered end with multiple notches cut into the tip of the shank. Recommended for a variety of materials including heavy sheet metal, castings, forgings, steel, plywood and plastic.
  • TYPE 23: Thread cutting screws with machine screw thread, a blunt point and slightly tapered end. The tip includes a thread cutting chip removal slot providing an improved thread cutting area and excellent chip clearing properties. Recommended for softer materials including sheet metal, aluminum, brass, zinc and plastic.
  • TYPE 25: Thread cutting screws similar to Type 23 point except with coarse Type B thread, with a blunt point and tapered end. Also has a large chip clearing cavity cut into the tip. Recommended For plastics and other softer materials.

Stainless steel offers corrosion resistance over carbon steel, but limits the use of thread cutting screws because it is a softer material. The material into which the thread cutting screw is driven should have a lower hardness by 10-20 Rockwell hardness points.
